Cook something for your poker night
October 25, 2009
There are a lot of things to do before a poker night. If you are a host of a poker night then you have to make sure that you are able to feed your guests. One of the house rules that you can implement is a ten percent deduction from the buy in so that the money can be used for food and drinks. If there is a one hundred dollar buy in, then ten dollars is given to the host for food and for drinks. Here are some of the things that you can cook for your guests so that they feel that house fee was all worth it.
Chicken strips are a great way to keep your guests full and nibbling throughout the night. How can you prepare chicken strips? First you simply thaw the chicken and then cut it up into strips. You prepare a breading or a mixture that is made up of flour, egg, some pepper, and some salt. You coat the chicken fingers with this mixture and then you deep fry it until it turns golden brown. When it is golden brown, you remove the chicken strips and try to drain as much oil from the chicken strip as possible. You can put some ketchup on the side when you serve this dish. Your guests will certainly enjoy this.
Garlic mushrooms are also a great way to keep your guests nibbling on something throughout the night. The first thing to do when preparing garlic mushrooms is to cut the garlic as finely as possible. Cooks would call this mincing. When the garlic is as minced as possible, put it in a frying pan with oil. Add the mushrooms quickly after. Toss the garlic and toss the mushrooms around until you see the garlic turning golden brown. When you see this happening, you can remove the mushrooms and the garlic from the frying pan. Serve this hot and your guests will keep coming back for more.
Aside from these two great dishes, you might want to add some club sandwiches. Making a club sandwich is very simple. Toast some bread. Toss in a few lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and some mayonnaise. Put in cold cuts for some sandwiches and put in some fried bacon in the other sandwiches. Vary the meat in the sandwiches. Put all the ingredients in between layers of the sandwich and then cut the sandwich into four. Use some toothpicks to hold the layers together. Serve this immediately.
These great tasting dishes are perfect for anybody’s poker night. Toss in some beer and some wine and you will have the perfect poker night. In some cases, some people will simply enjoy the company and the food and not mind losing the money at poker. If you can cook really well and if you can keep guests entertained then you are on the road to being one of the best poker hosts. If people love your place and if they love your food then there are a lot of reasons for you to host the best poker games.
Mixing your drinks
October 15, 2009
Aside from great food, you will have to make great drinks at a poker invitational at your house or condo. If you want to make good drinks then you have to pay attention to the details. You have to pay attention to the people that are going to your party. You have to pay attention to what kind of drinks they want. Are you going to make lady’s drinks? Are you going to make drinks that will automatically get you wasted? These are the things that you should think about when you are mixing drinks for your poker invitational. Anyway, going back to the drinks, here are a few drinks that you might want to have at your next poker game.
The rum coke is one of the most popular drinks at bars nowadays. It is very easy to make rum coke. You put in two parts of coke and one part of rum into a drinking class. Add some ice and then serve. This drink is ideal for those who simply want to get a little bit of a buzz at the poker table. If you would like to be a little bold when it comes to your poker game then maybe a glass of rum coke is the way to go.
Gin Pom or Gin Pomelo is another great drink that you can serve at your parties. Again, it is very easy to make Gin Pom. The first thing to do is make Pomelo Juice. You can use the powdered mixes that you can find at the supermarket or you can make your own natural Pomelo juice from the Pomelo fruit. It definitely tastes better when the natural fruit is used. An alternative to Pomelo is Lemon. If you do not have pomelo around then simply make lemonade. In this kind of drink, you mix two parts of the juice and one part of the gin. Serve this drink with ice. This drink is also used to give a buzz to your guests. If you want your guests to start being bolder with their poker moves then this is one of the drinks that you should have in your party.
Vodka Seven or Vodka Sprite is a drink that you can serve the ladies. This is simply mixing two parts of Seven Up or two parts of Sprite with one part of Vodka. Serve this with ice and a cherry on top. If you want to give a buzz, especially to the ladies out there, then you can serve this drink at your poker games.
The drink that you should never go without is definitely beer. No party is a party without beer. Selecting your beer is important. You can go get the Corona and add lime to it or you can go get the classic Budweiser to serve your guests. For the more health conscious people, you can have Coors Light. Make sure that you have enough drinks for the guests and the poker players at your poker games. In this way, everyone enjoys and has a good time.
Comments on Phil Gordon
October 8, 2009
On a personal level, Phil Gordon is my idol in poker. Why? Even if Phil Gordon has never won a bracelet at the World Series of Poker, I think that he is an admirable person as a whole. First of all, before Phil got into poker, he finished a Computer Science degree at Georgia Tech. He went on to start up a software company that he later on sold for millions of dollars. Phil Gordon is certainly one of the smarter poker players out there. With solid education and solid business skills to back him up, it is very hard to knock this guy off at the poker table. Phil Gordon is also very intimidating. At six foot and nine inches tall, he towers over almost anybody around him. Phil Gordon spends his time travelling around the world and appreciating existence. He guests at poker television shows and still continues to play at a lot of live poker games.
What can you learn from Phil Gordon? You can learn a lot from Phil Gordon. First of all, first things come first. You have to be stable with your education and your career if you want to spend the remaining years of your life playing poker. At the age of twenty seven, Phil Gordon was already done with all the money making stuff. He was already a multi millionaire at that age. From then on, all he did was travel the world and play poker. If you are able to make millions like Phil Gordon then you certainly deserve to relax and play poker for the remaining years of your life.
Second, it pays to be smart at the poker table. If you are gifted with a high IQ then use it. If you are able to finish degrees like computer science, molecular biology, astrophysics, and all those geeky courses, then you might as well put your good brains to work with poker. With sharp brains, you will be able to calculate odds quickly, you will be able to compute the right amount to bet, and you will be able to weigh your chances against a certain number of opponents. If you can calculate this quickly in your head then you have a good chance of winning at poker tournaments.
Third, it pays to be street wise at the poker table too. When I say street wise, you have to know how people react in certain situations. You have to understand how people think. You have to be able to spot cunning people and take them down. In the world of business, Phil Gordon has an idea on how to work around the streets. He has his way with people. If you want to master the game of poker then you have to learn how to master challenging certain types of opponents. You have to learn how to analyze your opponents. You have to see whether your opponents are doing some funny street tactics. You have to learn how to take them down when the time comes.
Teaching people how to play poker
October 1, 2009
You love the game of poker. You love the thrill that it brings to your life. You love spending time playing this game. When it comes to poker, you know that you will be having tons of fun. You know that you are going to enjoy the next number of hours playing to your hearts content. What more to share the joy of poker than to teach it to others? If you are planning to teach poker to other people then here are a few steps to take.
First, teach the beginners what the hands are in poker. They have to understand the high card. They have to understand the pair, the two pair, the three of a kind, the straight, the flush, the full house, the four of a kind, the straight flush, and the royal flush. They have to understand that the ace is the highest card but can also be used as a one in a straight.
Second, you have to teach the beginners the cycles in poker. You have to teach them how many cards you receive. You have to teach them what the flop is all about. You have to teach them about the turn card. You have to teach them about the river card. You have teach them about the community cards and the cards that they are holding.
Third, you have to teach them the betting system. You have to teach them how much to raise, how much to call, and when one should fold. You have to teach them appropriate betting. You have to teach them who wins the pot at the end of the game and who loses the pot at the end of the game.
Fourth, you have to teach them the blinds, the dealers, and the antes. You have to explain to them the logic of these things. You have to show them how to deal if ever they become the assigned dealer. You have to make it a point that they understand these details.
When you are done teaching them these things, make sure that you have some practice rounds of poker before you actually make any bets. Make sure that the person that is playing for the first time is comfortable shelling out money. You have to make sure that this person is comfortable with the idea of gambling and comfortable with the idea that you can lose a lot of money in poker.
At the end of the day, there is nothing more fulfilling than watching your students appreciate the game that you play. There is nothing more fulfilling than watching your students become good at the game that you love so much. There is nothing more fulfilling than watching one of your students become a world poker champion one day. Who knows, your poker prodigy might even end up giving you a bit of the winning pot. If you make the right bets then you will have students blossoming into great poker players one of these days.
